In this page you find all the hints and things in the series that can support the thesis of Hiei and Mukuro as a couple, those were collected by me or contributed by nice HiMuku fans. Of course, here you find our interpretation of the facts, so everything here is Our Humble Opinion.
Note: Quotes reported here may vary due to different international translations. Some quotes from episode 109 have been compared to Japanese version, but my Japanese is not very good so there may be mistakes anyways. Feel free to contact me and correct them if you find any.
- After Hiei defeated Shigure with a suicidal move, Mukuro put him in a regeneration tub to save his life, then she read his mind to understand the reasons that made him want to die… after that, she stripped herself in front of him, letting his open jaagan see her and look in her soul. Many people think of that as slutty, but it’s actually something very deep. She looked into Hiei’s mind and soul, so she let him look at her true self. The message is clear: “you have no more secrets for me, so I’ll have no secrets for you”. If Mukuro felt nothing for him, she wouldn’t have any reason to do that, on the other hand if Hiei wasn’t interested in looking deep in her soul he could easily have closed his jaagan. But he didn’t! Their relationship immediately becomes something deeper than the boss-subaltern one….
- When Mukuro agreed to take part to the Makai tournament, Hiei said her “I think we’re going to get along well, you know?” in another translation the same quote sounds “I liked you, you know?” (**meaning he liked the way she was acting**). I’m still searching for the original quote, but the meaning is clear… isn’t it? He likes her ways. ^_^
- Episode 109, just after the match started Hiei walked in her direction and thought about himself and Mukuro with these words: “Since born, I and you never received affection, but we only got cold eyes looking at us. And so we opposed to those eyes until we tore them into pieces… because of this, I don’t know why I felt this way with you.” Almost a love declaration XDD With her it was different… this mean he felt affection coming from her, and he feels the same for her! ^__^ How sweet.
- Episode 109, after the battle ends and Hiei admits his defeat, Mukuro tells him “Hiei, don’t say something like that you want to to live just to defeat me… it would be too sad.” of course it will be sad, with all the love growing between them it would be sad, indeed!! XD But he cares for her happiness so he replies “With you… I won’t fight anymore…” (“Omae to… mou tatakawanai…” I just love the way he says that ** with that almost whispering voice… awww… *melts*). Just to reply to the ones that keep saying Hiei stays with Mukuro just because he wants to become stronger and beat her. Hiei has no interest at all in fighting her! Of course, he loves her! Eheh! *w*
- During their battle in episode 109, Hiei uses his Kokuryuuha to break Mukuro’s slave chains, that she wasn’t able to break. Then he says “All the hate is something belonging to the past, now you don’t need those anymore. Maybe it isn’t too soon to leave everything behind… for you… and for me.”. Many translations I found say “Maybe it’s too soon”, that’s not what I understand, but well, it’s still a way to say that someday they may be able to forget everything. It’s his way to tell her to look forward and fight for the present and the future, not for hate for her past… and also says that he’s ready to start over with her. This is a very lovely act towards her and a proof that he actually cares a lot about her.
- To thank him for the previous point, she hugged him very sweetly. ^_^ Hiei was exhausted, but I think it’s *absolutely evident* that he was trying to walk towards her with all his remaining strength before fainting (it seems he WANTED her to prevent his fall… or maybe he was just longing for an hug? ^.^) and the way he leant his chin over her shoulder and closed his eyes in total abandon is a clear proof that he has total trust in Mukuro and I’m sure he really liked the place! ^__~ Then they stay there in a sacred and romantic silence and with just a sweet background music and the screen turns black around them, focusing on the fact that except being together nothing else is important (awww, it’s too romantic ^///^ *faints*).
- At the end of the series (ep. 112), Hiei went into Mukuro’s room (without asking for permission, too ^^). There she told him that he could to go back to Ningenkai with his friends, and he replied something like “Just *if* and *when* I’ll feel like to.” calmly placing his feets on Mukuro’s table and smirking (it seems he feels at home in Mukuro’s room, ne? *grins*). Looks just like he hasn’t an will to go away! ^3^ Moreover, he decided to stay with her in Makai even if he thinks the patrolling work he has to do is very boring… It means something, doesn’t it? *w*
- In the “Special day” chapter (manga, vol. 19) Hiei cares to find a birthday present for Mukuro. ^_^ He gave her her father imprisoned by a parasite plant and wrapped by a nice ribbon. Just ready to be tortured as she likes. ^__^ This is another way to show her his affection and has the same meaning of breaking her chains in the anime. Anyway, do you think that Hiei would actually take care of finding a birthday present for someone else? And even wrap it in a ribbon? And, especially, after having received a nice hole in the stomach from the person in question? I think not.
- “Special day” chapter. Hiei goes to Kurama to have his wound healed (Mukuro got very angry with you, ne, Hiei-chan? ^^) and to ask for help for Mukuro’s present… after knowing that Mukuro was the cause of his friend’s wound, Kurama said “Ah, so it was Mukuro! Was it a love matters quarrel?”. Yay for you, Kitsune! You hit the point! XD We all know how smart Kurama is, don’t we? Hiei sharply denied with “Do you want to die?”, but we all know he’s just shy… and denial… XD
- “A special day” chapter. after being healed by Kurama, Hiei goes to Chiko with the Hitomodoki plant. When asked about his identity and his business there, he just replied “I’ll introduce an extraordinary woman to you”, then he traps Chiko with the Hitomodoki and brings him to Mukuro as present. Hiei said Mukuro is “an extraordinary woman”! Isn’t it clear? Hiei thinks she’s special! ^o^ Of course he thinks that, he loves her! The loved one is always special! ^____^
- Here we have a more technical hint, based on the structure of the last chapters of the manga… The last four chapters are titled (translating from Italian edition) “A special day”, “Peaceful moments”, “Go? Don’t go?” and “And then…”. Focusing attention of the first two, you’ll notice that they’re mostly about love life: we have Hiei and Mukuro occupying the whole “A special day” chapter, then the “Peaceful moments” chapter is composed by short stories (which length varies from 1 to 4 pages) involving in this order: Yanagisawa+a friend of him (his future wife), Chuu+Natsume and Rinku+Sasuga, Kido and an unknown girl that dropped him, Koto, Juri and Ruka talking of their unlucky love for Touya, Suzuki and Jin, Koenma+Ayame, Atsuko+her ex-husband and eventually Yuusuke+Keiko (with a Kuwabara+Yukina flash on the last page). The last two are an introduction to the end of the series, focusing in the end on Yuusuke and Keiko. Now, looking at this, it seems that Togashi-sensei wanted to take a tour into his characters’ love life before saying goodbye to everyone. They’re mostly short moments, but in Hiei and Mukuro’s case we have a whole chapter! IMHO, Togashi-sensei tried implicitly to tell that Hiei and Mukuro were meant to be a couple. ^_^

Note: Ok… I know Catgirl-san wrote all the things that she saw in the anime and manga… (and I agree with her ^^) so… I will talk about my favourite couple in the OVA. The first OVA is YuYu Hakusho “Opening&Ending Encyclopedia” and the second is YuYu Hakusho “Theme from Darkness 2 – Hiei’s story” (Note by Cat: this is Hiei’s story in the OVA Eizou Hakusho II, not released in Europe or in the US). If you have that OVAs you can understand very easily ^^
- In the “Opening&Ending Encyclopedia” you will see something in Mukuro’s room ….something that is big and green and its shape is like fat man….YES!!! It’s her baka father that Hiei made into a tree and gave her for birthday. It’s still in the room… and she’s sitting in the usual chair (or bed… I’m not sure ^^”), you can see that she’s wearing the hiruseki necklace (of course that’s Hiei’s necklace ^^), but when you see Mukuro’s face… it feels like she looks so sad (and beautiful too =^^=). Do you know why?? Around Mukuro there are the things that Hiei gave her… (that means she misses Hiei everytime when she sees the items)… but now he isn’t here with her… that why she looks so sad (oh!! Hiei come back in hurry… Mukuro misses you >o< )
- In the YuYu Hakusho Theme from Darkness2 (Hiei’s story) has a new music videotape… and in the music, Hiei goes to help Yukina, she stays in the ice, he destroys it and Yukina (whose body is nude = =) falls down and Hiei rises his hand to catch hers but… he can’t… she floats up and at the next shot there’s someone opening the eye (it’s not Yukina) she has long beautiful orange hair… her nude body is so very nice and the wings on her back make her like an angel…… but believe me…..that girl is Mukuro!!!! (her face and her body are perfect) this music is trying to say Yukina and Mukuro are special persons for Hiei and… Mukuro is the angel of his heart…… so very very cute >0<

- When Mukuro was talking to Hiei in episode 104 (I think) she asked Hiei who will he side with if she herself and Yusuke fight. Hiei said neither, but Mukuro didn’t believe him and said that if Yusuke was weaker than her, Hiei will help Yusuke. Then, more importantly she said “I envy him(Yusuke)” after that. Which means she wants Hiei’s loyalty and very possibly his affections too. But please take note that this is from a Thai version.
(Note by Cat: Yup! That’s correct. ^.^ the same scene happens in manga, volume 18, episode title: “A gift by Yusuke”-translatingfromItalian-. Precisely, Hiei says he’d side with neither and he’d fight against the winner between the two, but that at the moment she’d win with 100% chance… and this leads to the conclusion that he would fight against her and hence side with Yusuke. I wonder how could I miss this one. XP Thank you very much.)
